Our beloved Mildred Sheaffer Hammock died, 81, on May 5, 2012. Mildred Sheaffer was born to the late Edward Elias Sheaffer and Edna Hartzel Sheaffer on November 3, 1930 in Duncannon, PA. Mildred graduated from Havre de Grace High School in Maryland and attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. Mildred was the beloved wife of Branch Reed Hammock, married while he was in the Military at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1951; he survives her.
Mildred and Branch lived in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Delaware but always considered Waynesboro, Virginia home. She was a joyful member of First Presbyterian Church where she was an active member of Congregation Care Committees, participated in church circles, book groups, and was a favorite soprano soloist in the Church choir, most remembered for her role in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors.
Mildred was known for her compassion to others and as a community caregiver. She opened her heart and home with loving kindness to strangers who frequently became members of the family. These include Francois Muyumba from the Congo, Jacco Kappers from Holland, the entire Luong family from Vietnam who still remember her as their "American Mommy." Mildred helped numerous individuals by delivering Meals on Wheels and driving patients to medial appointments at UVA.
Mildred was the loving mother of Randolph Lawrence Hammock, of Sun Valley, CA; Mark Alan Hammock (Pamela Persing Hammock), of Waynesboro, VA, Susan Hammock Cabell of Waynesboro, VA; Janice Nicole Hammock (Arthur Kenneth Bender), of San Francisco, CA and three grand children: Anna Marie Hammock, Arlington, VA; Eva Gray Bender and Branch Elias Bender, San Francisco, CA. She is survived by two siblings: John Sheaffer (Leta Sheaffer) and Alan Sheaffer. Mildred was predeceased by her beloved sister Loretta Perdue, Atlanta, GA.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, May 8 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at 704 Cherry Avenue, Waynesboro. The memorial service will be Wednesday, May 9 at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church at 11th and Main Street, Waynesboro, VA.
