R. Charles McLear, 81, of Jefferson Avenue, Waynesboro, died Monday, May 21, 2012 at his residence.

He was born October 12, 1930 in Staunton, Virginia, a son of the late Raymond Charles McLear and Lily Grove McLear.

Mr. McLear was a U.S Air Force veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 340. He was retired from the former Montgomery Ward Company. He was a member of the local Gem and Mineral Club of Waynesboro, where he enjoyed wire wrapping and jewelry making. He was a lifelong member of Basic United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Mens Club and was a past choir member.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Faye Webb McLear on Nov. 12, 2009 and a special aunt, E. Madeline Gaylor.

Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie M. Tinsley of Staunton, Shannon M. Ely and husband George of Apex, North Carolina; three granddaughters, Morganne Tinsley, Calla Tinsley and Madelyn Tinsley.

A service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Thursday May 24, 2012 at Basic United Methodist Church by the Rev. Don Gibson. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be church members.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at McDow Funeral Home. Family and friends may sign the guest register at www.mcdowfuneralhomeinc.com

The family would like to express their gratitude to his special neighbors, Mabel Painter and the Leeson family.
