Elizabeth A. Hays died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Stuarts Draft Christian Home.

She was born in Augusta County and graduated from Madison College now James Madison University. She taught in Augusta County and retired from Rockbridge County Schools after 40 years of service. A member of Vesuvius Baptist Church in Vesuvius for many years, she was currently a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, where she served as a deacon and in the areas of preschool education, Sunday School, homebound ministries, and missions.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl W. Hays in 1984, and her brother.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sara H. and William L. Bateman of Glen Allen; 3 grandsons and their wives; Mark and Kari Fitzgerald of Blue Ridge, Adam and Kristen Bateman of Glen Allen, and John and Melissa Bateman of Midlothian; 2 great-grandsons and 2 great-granddaughters; and her sister, Erminie A. Harris of Fishersville.

Services will be private at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Steeles Tavern.

Memorials may be sent to the endowment fund of First Baptist Church, 301 S. Wayne Ave., Waynesboro, VA 22980.
